Cutting Edge Collaboration

Cypress, California-based Christie Digital Systems, Inc. pioneered the implementation of digital projection into the modern moviegoing experience. Christie’s growth as a visual technologies manufacturer prompted the need to upgrade the corporate presentation and telepresence capabilities throughout its headquarters. In 2010, Christie turned to Sunset Studios for guidance in creating integrated solutions that adhered to Christie’s pre-approved budget plan.

Stateroom – multipurpose executive boardroom

Dubbed “the Stateroom” due to its odd prow shape, the renovated boardroom accommodates up to eight meeting participants plugged in via tilt-ups embedded around the boardroom table, with four additional bench seating positions available around the perimeter. An Atlona matrix switcher allows executives to seamlessly transition from one source to another during high-level presentations.

For telepresence events, the boardroom enables easy switching provided by a dedicated video teleconference codec and for PC-based video conferencing collaboration via a fixed focal-length USB camera and a 7.2 surround sound system. A simple, wireless touchscreen display enables full automation of the AV, lighting, and telepresence functions within the room.

Chart Room – finance

The Finance Collaboration Studio -- aka the “Chart Room” -- is a multi-use meeting and collaboration office environment featuring state-of-the-art video lighting and USB Camera/ USB microphone capabilities for PC collaboration software such as Vidyo or Skype. Additionally the room supports a large electronic white board.

The display is a 70” LCD display built flush into the wall with a variety of connecting points for users with laptops for presentations. The facility supports multiple functions for the finance group meetings, collaborations and internal presentations.

Jewel Box – multipurpose presentation telepresence suite

The GIS Video Collaboration Suite – aka the “Jewel Box” -- seats 4-10 participants, configurable for video telepresence, audio teleconference and presentation capabilities. The built-in millwork configures along the “long” wall and conceals three edge-mounted 60” flat panel displays. A motorized shade conceals the displays when not in use.

A large rear projection display is built into the far wall with a high quality speaker system flanking the screen. Much like the Stateroom, the Jewel Box provides interconnect from the conference table for several laptops via matrix switching.

The room’s simple wireless touch panel controls all aspects of the room’s environment and audiovisual system, including the display shade and motorized privacy blinds installed over room’s glass walls.

Lyceum – training facility

The central issue of the Lyceum renovation was increased versatility. As a result, the unusual feature of this room is its retractable partition, which can be used to divide the space into Lyceum A and Lyceum B when required. The facility supports multiple functions including meetings, presentations, classes and product demos.

In addition, Lyceum B provides facilities for digital cinema projector training classes, including 3 phase power, air extraction and both 2D matte white and 3D polarized silver cinema screens. For presentations and meetings, Shure wireless mics feed into a Yamaha mixer, while Tannoy arena and subwoofer speakers provide maximum clarity regardless of the room size.

CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPARD

Making AV Integration a Religious Experience

The Church of the Good Shepard is a Methodist church located in Arcadia, California. Its chapel dates back to the Church’s founding in 1945, while the larger sanctuary was completed in 1957. As of the mid-2000s, it had been decades since either space had its sound and lighting systems updated.

Sunset Studios’ relationship with the Church began in 2006, when we were contacted to rewire the existing audio system in the chapel. In 2010, however, the Church contacted us again – only this time, they were interested in a comprehensive overhaul of the sound/lighting system in the sanctuary, albeit on a modest budget. We began with a review of the audio distribution and lighting control systems that became the core of our scope of work. Part of the Church’s motivation for the update was to draw in a younger crowd who tend to appreciate increased audio fidelity. While the natural acoustics of this church are wonderful, the sound system would support and enhance the spoken word and music produced by the vocal choir and bell choir. The goals were elegance and ease of use.

The live acoustic of the sanctuary is mitigated by the wood features of the ceiling. For this reason, the Martin OmniLine speaker array system are the perfect choice to accommodate with precise audio field. In addition, Tannoy I7 column source loudspeakers face into the chancel and serve as a monitor system for the choir, while Martin AQ8’s are used for balcony fill.

Shure SLX digital wireless mics successfully cut through the traffic jam of competing radio frequencies from the neighborhood surrounding the Church in Arcadia with wired mics are suspended over the bell choir in their alcove. The mics feed into a Mackie 24-channel/4-bus analog mixing console located in the balcony. The client requested that we not install a digital mixer, given that the console would most likely be manned by a parishioner with limited technical experience – if that. For this reason, an EAW DX1208 DSP Matrix mixer and UR2 remote keypad are also installed, enabling the automation of the system for events such as weddings via presets triggered by a single button.

In the Narthex (lobby) and exterior entry zones, audio from the mixer is piped in with proper delay via the EAW 1206 signal distribution system. Upgrading the lighting control system, Sunset selected the Lightronics RE-82 DMX-controlled dimmer platform. With the use of a simple keypad in the balcony or from the equipment room located off of the chancel, presets enable the sanctuary lighting to be controlled from a single button.

In 2012 the Church came back to Sunset with the request to update Jordan Hall, a multi-use auditorium. We consequently outfitted the space with HD video projection and a surround sound system – integrating control over lighting, computer display and blu-ray with a simple one button keypad/touch screen. The lighting upgrade involved Sunset retrofitting RadioRA wireless radio controls into switches.

The Church’s elegant, powerful sound/lighting system enhances the experience of its parishioners and the beauty of the environment. Sunset was honored to be part of their team.

PRIVATE RESIDENCE, WEST LOS ANGELES

Home Sweet Home Automation

This Brentwood residence was a family house of 25 years that received a complete renovation in 2007. The client’s desire was to create a simple home automation system to provide control over a variety of lifestyle elements such as climate control as well as back ground music, the security camera. Beginning with the prewire for the telephone data and satellite system distribution, Sunset Studios provided a simple user interface to control and automate every lifestyle element.

The entry to the home is controlled via an entry access intercom that calls directly into the telephone system using a distinctive ringtone. The gate is triggered from a single button, allowing access to the front door. When the doorbell is pressed, the gate camera automatically triggers onto the television screens and touchpanels throughout the house, allowing a view of the front gate from any TV viewing area, the touchpanel in the master bedroom and the central touchpad located in the dining kitchen area.

The music distribution is fed from a music sound server, providing access to the client’s 20,000 song archive -- with complete album cover art and metadata -- to the touchpanel. This provides the client the ability to set up his own music playlists or listen to a wide variety of musical genres or artists.

Sunset installed a 65” HD display in the family room and integrated a high quality surround sound system built around an Anthem surround preamp processor, an Anthem multichannel amplifier and a BG line array speaker system for extremely accurate and narrow area coverage. The system is installed in a central rack closet in close proximity to the TV area, leaving the living space equipment-free, but remaining close enough to easily interact with the system -- to swap out blu-rays, for example.

The home’s climate control system is a model of efficiency, providing zoned control over the heating and air conditioning; dampers redirect energy where it’s needed without waste. In addition, the use of automated blinds and window coverings significantly decreases the client’s climate control costs.

Finally, the use of an integrated lighting control system provides the client with an automatic timer to set up scenes throughout the house, including the rear patios and landscape. A built-in atomic clock allows features tied to the sunrise or sunset – for example, landscape and exterior pathway lighting – to shift as the time changes with the seasons. All of these presets can be controlled and changed dynamically via the touchpanel’s simple setup or from their smart phone.
